Nest is a relatively new company, which was founded in 2010 by the former Apple engineers Matt Rodgers and Tony Fadell. This innovative California based firm specializes in producing home automation products. One of the best things about their products is that they are compatible with many other devices and appliances including those made by firms like Whirlpool, LG, Jawbone, Google and Wink.
The fact that many of the gadgets they make are programmable makes them very popular. Both homeowners and business premise owners appreciate the flexibility this gives them.
This company started out by making smoke alarms, carbon monoxide sensors and thermostats. Today, they are best known for their innovative home security systems and peripherals.
The Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor Security Camera Bundle
You do not need a hub to use these security cameras, which gives them the edge over many other systems. All you need to do is to plug it in, download the Nest App and connect it up to your Wi-Fi system.
Both of the cameras have built in sound and motion sensors. They each have a viewing angle of 130 degrees. Unfortunately, the provided mounts do not swivel through 360 degrees, so you may have to fiddle with the cameras to get the viewing area right.
You can set them up so that when they are triggered you are sent both an alert and a photo. This allows you to see what is going on straight away and decide whether to take any further action.
It is also possible to have a two-way conversation with someone who is still at home to find out why the camera was triggered. Some people use these cameras to be alerted when the dog has jumped on the sofa, at which point they use the audio capability to tell them to get down. Setting up an activity zone that focuses on a specific area of a room is a great way to make sure you only get alerts when you really need them.
When you buy this bundle, you get a free trial of the Nest Aware app, which allows you to receive alerts and use the two-way conversation facility. If you do decide to pay the monthly subscription, you can also save recordings. With a resolution of 1080p, the quality of the images is good and night vision is included.
There is one big issue with the system, which is the way the alerts work. If you receive a message, it will be at least 30 minutes before you receive another one. Why Nest has decided to take that approach is a mystery, but it can be a bit of a pain. For example, it means that the system is not really suitable for specific situations, such as use as a baby monitor or granny cam.
The other issue seems to be that the picture sometimes freezes. This is usually due to a poor network connection. If you do not have a fast internet connection, these cameras are not likely to be the right option for you.
Nest Learning Thermostat
For the first few weeks, you have to program the thermostat manually so it can work out the patterns. After that, it becomes a set it and leave it system.
When you are not home the system automatically adjusts the temperature to reflect the fact that your house is empty. Before you are due to come home, the heat or air-conditioning is adjusted again. This ensures your family is always comfortable and that you do not waste energy.
If you sign up for the app, you can view the history, so you can spot points in the day when you may be wasting energy. To be able to benefit from all of the features and keep it updated, you will need to connect it to your Wi-Fi network.
You can control or adjust the device remotely using your phone, Laptop or tablet. The latest, 3rd generation, Nest thermostat also works with the Amazon Alexa, which gives you the capability to control the device using your voice.
It is possible to use this thermostat with most one, two or three stage heating systems and the majority of one or two stage cooling systems. If you have two-zone heating, you will need to buy two thermostats.
Installation is relatively simple if you already have a thermostat installed because you wire up your new one in the same way.
The device runs on batteries, so it can potentially be set up anywhere in your property, but it also needs to be wired to your heating or cooling system.
Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm
This industrial grade smoke and carbon monoxide alarm is connected to your Wi-Fi network, which means that if the device is triggered you will be sent an alert. You can then call someone to investigate or turn on your security camera to see what the problem is. If you have more than one sensor set up in your home, you will be told which sensor has been tripped.
You also get an alert if the batteries run low. Using the Nest protect app you can also turn the alarm off, so that it does not end up running out of battery power or disturbing your neighbors unnecessarily.
This carbon monoxide alarm lasts for 10 years. The smoke alarm detects both fast and slow burning fires. The safety features of this device make it a great addition to a Nest security system.
