Netgear Arlo develops and makes advanced home networking and security systems that look great and are affordable, easy to install, run and maintain. Their aim is for their customers to have the smartest homes possible.

The firm was incorporated in 1996, but its history goes back another two decades to 1985 when its parent company, SynOptics, was founded. Over the years, this tech firm has taken an innovative approach to home networking, which means that they have frequently been the first to offer homeowners new features and innovations.

They make hundreds of different products, but on this page, we are going to look specifically at the Netgear Arlo home security range.

Arlo Pro Security System with Siren

If you are looking for a wire-free home security camera system, this kit contains all that you need. It consists of a base station with a built-in 100-decibel siren and a single indoor/outdoor security camera with night vision, which also features two-way audio. The audio feature enables you to have a conversation with someone who is at your door or an elderly relative who is having a problem in the home – this is a feature many other systems do not have.

Installing this system is easy. Most people have no problems with setting it up. All you need to do is to mount the camera, connect the siren base to your home Wi-Fi network, and pair it with the camera. Importantly, Netgear also provides good support for the few customers that have questions.

The camera runs off rechargeable batteries, so it does not need to be set up near a power source. You can buy spare batteries from Netgear and a fast charging station, which that ensures your camera will never have to be offline while you charge the batteries. Should you not want to buy these additional items, there is the option to plug the camera into a power source using the adapter that is included in the kit.

The camera activates and starts recording when it detects movement or noise in the area it is covering. You can use it indoors or outdoors. It has a 130-degree viewing angle and a night vision feature, which works well. Only the base station / siren unit is not weatherproof, which means it has to be installed indoors. However, the camera can be installed anywhere.

Included in the price is a free cloud recordings package that allows you to store up to 7 days worth of footage. If you want to store your recordings for longer, you just need to buy a monthly subscription.

These HD quality recordings can be reviewed and excerpts saved for later use as evidence. You can also set up local storage by connecting a pen or hard drive to the base unit using the built-in USB slot.

The app works really well, and most users find it reliable and easy to use. A slight issue for some is that iPhone users cannot set the length of time the system records for once activated, but this is likely to be fixed with a future software update. You can access everything from your smartphone and other devices and see what is happening live, when you want to.

This is a great starter system. It is ideal for those people who want to keep an eye on a pet or monitor who is at the front door. However, if you need a full home security system you will have to buy more cameras. Fortunately, as you will see by reading on, this is easy to do.

Netgear Arlo Wire-Free Add-on Camera

If you want to add cameras to the kit we spoke about above, these are ideal. To use these cameras you will need to have already bought, and setup, a base station.

They can be used outdoors as well as indoors and include a night vision feature that provides HD quality clarity, even in the dark. These cameras can be bought individually or in packs of up to five.

They are motion and sound activated. When triggered a photo will be taken and uploaded to the cloud, so you can view it immediately, and decide what to do next.

It is important to note that these units do not include an audio function. Therefore, it is not possible to have a two-way conversation using them. However, the “Ultimate Kit” option for these cameras also includes two Arlo Q’s, which do support two-way audio.

Options are available for these add-on cameras to purchase between one and five extra cameras – some even have built-in smart light bulbs.

Netgear Arlo Q Wired Security Camera

This simple wired security camera provides a clear picture of what is going on in the area it covers. The camera has a 130-degree field of vision and has high-quality night vision capabilities.

It features two-way audio, so that you can have a remote conversation with someone in your home. You can set the camera up to start recording as soon as it detects motion or noise, or you can turn it on using the app.

The fact that this camera does not have to be connected to a base station makes it an extremely affordable way to monitor what is going on in your home. To be able to view what is happening live and see recordings that are stored on your cloud account, all you need to do is to connect it to your home Wi-Fi system.

Netgear Arlo Outdoor Security Camera Mount

This mount is compatible with both standard and pro Arlo cameras. It can be used both inside and outside the home.

The stem is 5 inches long, at the end of which is a universal camera mount that allows you to tilt through 90 degrees and turn the camera through 360 degrees. It is designed to be used on a wall or ceiling, but users also mount them on other surfaces, for example, on tree boroughs.

An important note regarding indoor Arlo security cameras

If you want to pick up movement outside your property, you will need to buy an outdoor camera and actually mount it outside. We mention this because some people have assumed that they can use an indoor camera for this, by pointing out of a window. Unfortunately, this does not work. This is because the glass prevents the camera from reliably hearing noise and detecting movement.
